Andria Apostolou, PhD, MPH
Through disease prevention, Senior Scientist Andria Apostolou hopes to improve human health and address health disparities around the world. Andria joined SciMetrika in 2011 and immediately made an impact in her areas of expertise: evaluation, and infectious and chronic disease epidemiology. Andria is particularly noted for her work with infectious disease surveillance and outbreak investigations, including conditions such as mumps, measles and H1N1. She has recently focused on health disparities in American Indian and Alaskan Native populations.
“My greatest interest right now is to achieve impact through policy change,” says Andria. “The abundance of data enables us to set priorities, monitor and measure progress to inform policies that improve human health.”
Experienced and Accomplished
Andria came to SciMetrika with a wealth of public health experience. She is a graduate of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s prestigious Epidemic Intelligence Service and the Health Systems Integration Program. Her international experience includes collaboration with Haiti’s Ministry of Health on the establishment of disease surveillance during post-earthquake response; participation as a facilitator and instructor in influenza training in Togo; and teaching applied epidemiology in Taiwan to Taiwanese and Haitian public health officials.
Extremely active in her field, in 2014 alone, Andria has co-authored three publications in the Emerging Infectious Disease Journal, the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, and Public Health Reports, moderated a panel at the 2014 Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists Conference, and will be presenting at this year’s APHA conference in New Orleans.
Andria has a PhD in Molecular Medicine from the University of Maryland, and an MPH in Biostatistics and Epidemiology from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. She holds certificates in public health preparedness, as well as in risk sciences and policy. Fluent in Greek, English, Spanish and French, Andria enjoys spending her free time learning new languages.
