Junior Scientist Microbiologist (T2)
JOB PURPOSE:
SciMetrika is seeking a Junior Scientist/Microbiologist who will support the QA/QC of real-time PCR reagents, antigen detection assay reagents, and other reagents for the LRN in the BRRAT Laboratory. The successful candidate will be located in Atlanta, GA at the CDC.
JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
- Performing QA/QC testing of reagents using real-time PCR, time-resolved fluorescence, ELISA, bacterial culture, microscopy, and other methods, as well as participating in research and development activities and work with select agents in BSL-2 and BSL-3 laboratories as assigned
- Data analysis and results data management
- QA/QC results reporting is required upon request by the BRRAT Laboratory
- Performing laboratory tasks which support QA/QC activities such as maintaining a laboratory supply inventory and ordering of supplies from CDC sources and outside vendors
- Managing the waste stream from non-infectious laboratory work
- Performing administrative tasks which support laboratory activities
- Attending staff meetings and conferences as required for performance of their duties, including travel if appropriate or required, travel is anticipated for these requirements up to 10 %
SPECIFIC TASKS AND TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Completion of CDC Laboratory Safety Survival Skills allowing for access and clearance to work in a CDC laboratory
- BSL-2 and/or BSL-3 training
- Proficiency with performing LRN-specific real-time PCR assays for the following potential biothreat agents:
- o B. anthracis
- o F. tularensis
- o Y. pestis
- o Brucella spp.
- o C. burnetii
- o Burkholderia spp.
- o Orthopox viruses
- Experience performing quality control testing of LRN-specific reagents
QUALIFICATIONS:
A Bachelors or Masters degree in life sciences (biology, microbiology, molecular biology or closely related field) is required. The candidate must be proficient in general molecular biology laboratory practices and Microsoft Office software applications. Laboratory experience with QA/QC testing activities is required. Experience performing real-time PCR assays or antibody-based diagnostic assays is required. U.S. citizenship is required.
