Junior Scientist Microbiologist (T1)

JOB PURPOSE:

SciMetrika is seeking 2 Junior Scientists/Microbiologists who will perform research activities to support the development and optimization of real-time PCR detection assays and other laboratory-based technologies for the BRRAT Laboratory.  The successful candidate will be located in Atlanta, GA at the CDC. 

JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Performing research into the development of diagnostic real-time PCR and RT-PCR assays for bioterrorism threat agents. Activities will include optimizing PCR assays, nucleic acid extraction, PCR, cloning, DNA sequencing, in vitro transcription and other molecular biology procedures and work with select agents in BSL-2 and BSL-3 laboratories as appropriate and/or required
  • Generating performance data for diagnostic real-time PCR and RT-PCR assays
  • Preparing samples and reagents for multicenter validation studies and shipping of study packages to participating laboratories
  • Testing reagent lots to ensure quality control
  • Data analysis and results data management
  • Performing administrative tasks which support laboratory activities
  • Attending staff meetings and conferences as required for performance of their duties, including travel if appropriate or required, travel is anticipated for these requirements up to 10%

SPECIFIC TASKS AND TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Completion of CDC Laboratory Safety Survival Skills allowing for access and clearance to work in a CDC laboratory
  • BSL-2 and/or BSL-3 training
  • Experience developing real-time PCR and RT-PCR assays as required for use by the Laboratory Response Network (LRN)
  • Experience working with bacterial and viral select agents including but not limited to the following agents or their nucleic acids:
  • o Ebola virus RNA
  • o Marburg virus RNA
  • o Alphavirus RNA
  • o Yersinia pestis
  • o Francisella tularensis

QUALIFICATIONS:

A Bachelors or Masters degree in life sciences (biology, microbiology, molecular biology or closely related field) is required. The candidate must be proficient in general molecular biology laboratory practices and Microsoft Office software applications.  Experience performing real-time PCR assays is required.  U.S. citizenship is required.
